Bending Roof Shingles In A Proper Manner
Often, the installation of the roof shingles requires you to modify the concerned roof area. However, the uneven structures of the roofs such as hips, ridges, rakes, eaves etc. require shingles that are angled slightly. The angled shingles fit into the void of such uneven roof structures and provide the required cover to the roof. The job of bending the roofs may become frustrating for you if you don’t follow certain tips.
Before moving ahead with the proceedings, understand the geography of the concerned roof area and plan the right technique for bending the asphalt shingles. The flexibility of the asphalt shingles varies depending on the weather conditions. Warm weather makes the shingles flexible. On the other hand, the cold weather makes the shingles brittle and inflexible. Hence, you must undertake the bending operation of the shingles only in the warm weather conditions.
If you have kicked off the campaign in the winter season then it would not be wise to apply brakes on the proceedings. The loss of time could prove costly for the structural integrity of the roof architecture. Hence, store the bundles of the shingles at a place which is warm and comfortable. The home interior spaces may be chosen to serve the required purpose.
On the other hand, storage of shingles should be done outside the home during summers. Allow the shingles as much warmth as possible and install the shingles on the roof.
Take one bundle at a time and place all the shingles flat on the roof spread. The scorching heat of the sun renders warmth which in turn makes the shingles more flexible.
After 2-3 hours, prepare yourself for the manual bending operation of the concerned shingle. Place the one end of the shingle on the edge of the concerned roof segment and hold the other end of the shingle with your hands. Avoid handling with fingertips as that could lead to a possible crack down of the shingle piece. Hence, try to cover as much edge area as possible.
Bend the shingle slowly and do not try to force the issue on the shingle. A sudden exertion of force may crack the shingle piece. Avoid overdoing the bending process and put brakes on the operation as soon as the contact with the concerned roof segment is made.
Once the shingle is installed in place, hammer down the nails into the shingles.
