Encompass Health Rehabilitation Hospital

My mother (stroke) was processed on a Friday night. We just got transferred from Vandy late after noon. First impressions were OK. Clean and Bright, new facility. Initial processing went smoothly. After a few hours of being there, my mother wants to take a walk. That is when the first problem started. We just got down the hall and we run into the charge nurse for the first time. An older white woman with brown curry hair. She stops me with on the fly evaluation on my mother with attending nurse close by. After seeing her only a brief moment and for the first time, she scolds me saying that family needs to watch her at all time. WHAT? I am just walking my mother down a hallway and I get stopped and brow beaten over family participation. We haven’t been there but 2 hours. Oh, and this is just the start of the problems. My mother was on heavy blood thinners causing her nose to bleed easily, something common with stroke victims from what I hear. They decide since it hasn’t stopped bleeding that she needs to go to the emergency room for a NOSE BLEED. The ambulance services won’t even pick up patients to transport them from this facility. So the staff wants me to transport her in my car late on a Saturday Night, like 11pm. I questioned this decision but they insisted that she needs to go to the ER. Once there, the ER team and doctors evaluated and sent her back to the Rehab with no other recourse and a nose clip to pinch her nostrils. Complete waste of time and simple solution. Other notes, food isn’t good, 2nd floor staff isn’t well trained. They seem to not care very much but demand family participation at all hours. Another issues we had non communication with regards to laundry ending up in a paper night gown. If they had informed us she needed clean laundry we would of made sure she had clean undies. On a side note, the speech therapist was very professional. Bottom line is this facility hasn’t developed the culture in advance care and rehab for stroke victims. We are going to NHC were we had better care in the past.
