A woman named Tiffany Johnson called and told me that they had bought a collections account from a payday loan (I supposedly took out in 2008) in 2012. She said that they had sent a certified package in the mail and it was returned to them. There is no evidence of this package (i.e. no note from the mailman when you have a certified letter and they miss you). She had my current address and phone number, last 4 of my social, my employer info from 2008, and my ex-husband’s email address attached to this file. I told her that this debt was not mine and she said she could file it as fraud and charge me $75 instead of $300. This would give me an "umbrella court order" that would satisfy this and any future fraudulent charges that came up. She wanted a check over the phone and I refused so she said I could send a money order to the address provided. This situation made me uneasy: this is not on my credit report, it’s possible that my ex-husband could have done this, but why wait 8 years (since 2008) to inform me about the debt or 4 years (since 2012) to start collections on it? That’s not normal collections procedure.
