I was working on my computer and I needed to download an image. When I went to get the downloaded image it went to a website that I did not ask for. I tried to get out of that and then a big error pop up came up with a blaring noise. It said that my computer security had been compromised and that I needed to call Microsoft right away. It said "Do Not Turn Off Your Computer". It stated that I would loose everything. I called the number and the phone was answered by a tech. I asked if it was Microsoft and he said yes. He told me that someone had hacked into my computer. I couldn’t get the pop up to go away or the noise to stop. Everything was frozen. He said his name was Michael and he gave me an ID that was MSN4147. He then told me that they would clean up my computer and put anti-virus software and supply technical support on all my devices. He said the cost would be $149.99. I told him I didn’t feel good about it. He had me talk to his supervisor who was very convincing. I gave them my debit card number. I regretted it immediately. They told me I was purchasing technical support for my computer and other devices. I let them get remote access to my computer and they did things for over an hour, They installed ccleaner and an adblocker. I asked questions and they had answers to everything. They sent me an email with an invoice and toll free number. They tried to sell me software for $349 for 3 years. I refused. Of course, my computer worked when they finished. I called my computer person and she told me I had more than likely been scammed. I contacted my credit union and had my debit card blocked and flagged the payment. It is in dispute right now. The company called me back today. A lady asked if my computer was working okay. I told her I felt that they were scamming me and others. She put her supervisor on, the same man I talked to yesterday. I tried to explain why I felt they scammed me. He told me that they are not a scam. They are legitimate. They have 35 technicians and they do what they promise. I told him I was going to check them out. I could not find the name of their company anywhere and when I checked scams on ScamPulse.com there were several similar to mine. My computer person cleaned my computer. I am hoping that they have not gotten all my information. I am very nervous about it.
